Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Takes part in catching drills

Moreno (oblique) was spotted taking part in catching drills and playing catch on the field prior to Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Arizona placed Moreno on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a left oblique strain, but the team is optimistic that the catcher will avoid a long-term absence and return to action in about two weeks, per MLB.com. Moreno's involvement in drills just a few days after landing on the shelf would seem to be a sign that he's trending in the right direction, but he still may need to complete a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated. In the meantime, the Diamondbacks will lean primarily on Adrian Del Castillo and James McCann to handle catching duties.

Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Homers off bench

Barrosa went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
Barrosa entered the game as a defensive replacement for Corbin Carroll (back), but Carroll is expected to be fine for Tuesday versus the White Sox, per Alex D'Agostino of SI.com. As long as the Diamondbacks have their preferred outfield of Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Carroll (from left to right) available, Barrosa is likely to be limited to a part-time role at best, though he could carve out some at-bats as a switch hitter. Barrosa's homer was his first of the season to go with five RBI, seven runs scored, seven doubles, one triple and a .243/.283/.480 slash line over 55 plate appearances.

The first baseman had the Blue Jays' first run-scoring hit in this contest, delivering a two-run single as part of a barrage of offense in the first inning. For the season, Guerrero is batting .333 with an .865 OPS, one home run, five doubles, 10 RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base over 21 games.

This was Okamoto's third multi-hit effort in his last six games, though he's also gone hitless six times over his last nine contests. The third baseman started the year with a six-game hitting streak, but that consistency has faded a bit. He's batting .221 with a .658 OPS, three homers, two doubles, eight RBI, seven runs scored and no stolen bases across his first 20 major-league contests. He was brought in as a power bat to fill a starting role at third base, and he's done that decently well so far, though his 8:29 BB:K is a notable concern in regards to plate discipline.

Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman: Steady in first win

Gausman (1-1) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Gausman had an eight-run lead before he ever threw a pitch in this contest, and that gave him plenty of breathing room. He allowed a single run in each of the second and sixth innings, coming away with a quality start while throwing 54 of 86 pitches for strikes. Gausman has struggled to get decisions early in 2026, but he's thrown three quality starts in five outings, pitching to a 2.54 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 35:6 K:BB over 28.1 innings. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Guardians.
Heineman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
After a recent bout with back spasms, Heineman returned to the lineup Thursday and started three straight games, going 1-for-9 with an RBI and a run scored. Though Brandon Valenzuela will get the nod behind the plate Sunday, Heineman could be the Blue Jays' preferred option at catcher until Alejandro Kirk (thumb) is ready to return from the injured list.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Start moved to Monday

Detmers is no longer scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Padres and will instead take the hill for Monday's game versus the Blue Jays in Anaheim, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Rather than waiting until the upcoming week to break in a new fifth starter, the Angels will have Walbert Urena enter the rotation for Sunday's series finale. Detmers tentatively lines up for two starts next week as a result, with his second turn set to come next Sunday in Kansas City.
Blue Jays' Jeff Hoffman: Serves up grand slam in second loss

Summoned to keep the game tied at 2-2 in the eighth frame, Hoffman proceeded to allow three consecutive baserunners to reach before a grand slam by Corbin Carroll before escaping the frame. The right-hander's grip on Toronto's closer role continues to loosen, as he's produced a 7.71 ERA and 2.04 WHIP while converting just two of his five save opportunities through 9.1 innings. Louis Varland was warming up for the ninth had the game remain tied or if a save situation had arose, and he appears to be the next man up in the bullpen should the Blue Jays consider other alternatives for saves. However, manager John Schneider stated that Hoffman remains the team's closer following the game, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.
Blue Jays' Max Scherzer: Bounces back with six strong frames

After yielding eight runs his last time out versus the Twins, Scherzer got back on track Saturday with his second quality start of the year and his first since his 2026 debut. It was also the veteran right-hander's first start of the season that he didn't serve up a home run. While Scherzer still has an ugly 7.16 ERA through his first 16.1 frames, he does hold a more palatable 1.29 WHIP and is set for a fairly soft matchup against the Guardians for his next start.

Just seven months after undergoing ACL repair surgery in September, Gurriel will return from the injured list to make his season debut against the Blue Jays. Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Should play through finger issue

Guerrero picked up a minor finger injury in Friday's loss to the Brewers, but Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated after the game that the first baseman is expected to be in the lineup Saturday, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Guerrero's left index finger clipped Jorge Barrosa on a play at first base, but he remained in the game Friday and doesn't look like he'll miss any time. Toronto can ill afford to lose Guerrero given all their other injuries, and through 19 games he's slashing .319/.427/.420 with one homer and eight RBI.
Soriano (5-0) allowed two hits and four walks while striking out eight over 5.2 shutout innings to earn the win Friday over the Padres.
Soriano fell short of a quality start for the first time this season, but he's still picked up a win in all five outings so far. The four walks matched his season high from Opening Day versus the Astros, but that's about the only complaint to be had with his performance. The right-hander has a tiny 0.28 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 39:13 K:BB across 32.2 innings so far. The walk rate is a concern in the long run, but he's consistently shown an ability to limit home runs as a groundball pitcher. He'll see his luck fade at some point, but he looks like the Angels' clear ace early in 2026. Soriano is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Blue Jays.
